Horror sub - genres


Psychological - relies on a characters fears, guilt and belief, e.g. the shining, the ring and the exorcist.

Parody - Combines elements of comedy and horror fiction, e.g. scary movie, Shaun of the dead and Gremlins.

Slasher - Deals with a lot of violence which usually revolves around psychopathic killer and numerous amounts of victims. They can also be built up with a lot of mystery and may sometimes overlap with crime, e.g. Psycho and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Zombie Horror - Portray reliving corpses or mindless humans that feed off of the living, e.g. night of the living dead and I am legend.

Supernatural horror - Includes ghosts, demons, or other depictions of supernatural occurrences. Often, Supernatural-Horror films combine elements of religion into the plot. Common themes in Supernatural-Horror films include the afterlife, the devil, and demonic possession.

Body horror - The horror is principally derived from the graphic degeneration or destruction of the physical body. Such works may deal with decay, disease, parasitism, mutation or mutilation.

Action horror - A subgenre combining the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage of horror movies with the gun fights and frenetic chases of the action genre. Themes or elements often prevalent in typical action-horror films include gore, demons, vicious animals, vampires and, most commonly, zombies.

Natural horror - (also known as creature features) is a subgenre of horror films that features nature running amok, typically in the form of animals or plants that kill people or at least pose a threat to them.
